We had won three and lost four. A very hot and cold season so far. We needed to win this game if we were to remain within the hunt for the top four. We started with a 4-4-2 formation. Wynners in goals; a back four of Anders, Joe A, Joey and Fergs; Sean, Mark, Chris, Niall, Wes in the middle; and Dan H up front. Wes was relieved to not be playing at centre-back.
We started well and took the game to Dunbar. Wes and Fergs linking up well on the left on numerous occasions. Wes was unlucky with a ripper of a shot that just went over the bar from the edge of the small rectangle. Wynners was doing well in goals – saving expertly with his right foot when their roaming midfielder was through one-on-one. The opening goal came from a throw-in from Fergs, to the well-placed Nialler who flicked the ball on with his head, Sean and Wes were in the box creating havoc and the ball eventually fell to Chris who booted the ball high into the net from a foot out. 1-0 to the Barney Boys at half-time.
Flanno duly arrived at half-time. His pipe was still a bit sore from all that riding he was at just one hour previous. Flanno reverted to the keeper position with Wynners taking up his managerial role once again on the sidelines. Alex came on for the hard-working Wes on the left.
The second goal came soon after the restart. Good work on the left by Alex allowed Fergs to storm into the box. A last-ditch tackle from the full-back resulting in a penalty. Fergs dusted himself off and drilled home the penalty. 2-0 and we had a bit of breathing space. A third quickly followed. A corner whipped in by Fergs allowed the diminutive Seany to rise like a phoenix from the ashes and power in a header to make it 3-0. He let out a loud “Get In” on his return to the half-way line. The lad was happy alright and he let everyone know. He thought to himself: “I scored with a header there, I am a man”. Nialler showed great leadership to round off our scoring, controlling a bouncing ball in the box before sliding the ball past the keeper. 4-0 and it was cruise-control.
Dunbar scored an immaterial goal from an opportunistic strike on the left. The ball looping over Flanno who was checking his pipe to make sure it was still in place after all that riding he was at just two hours previous. 4-1 the final score. A great performance and we were back on the horse.
Man-of-the-Match: Chris H – done a job in mid-field and scored the crucial opening goal.
Admirable mentions: Everyone else that took to the pitch – we all played well and got what we deserved: the victory.
Comic Highlight: Flanno apologising at half-time for cuming (sic) late because of all that riding he was doing just one hour previous.
